Fittingly named ‘Trim’ in tribute to Matthew Flinders’ sea going cat, this beautiful 35’ classic yawl was superbly built to order by Ohlson Bros shipwrights in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1961 of edge glued and copper roved Honduras Mahogany carvel construction on White Oak frames. Her keel and deadwoods are Yellow Pine and her spars are straight grained Sitka Spruce.
When completed, she was shipped to her first owner and was launched in 1962 in Seattle, Northwest USA, where she cruised and raced successfully for many years. Sailed from Seattle to Hawaii, she later found herself in the southern hemisphere, based in Adelaide where she was a former winner of the Adelaide to Port Lincoln offshore race. ‘Trim’ has sailed in Melbourne in recent times where she has been a regular and much admired participant in the Classic Yacht Association of Vic events on Port Phillip.
Her current custodian is relocating and regrettably, can’t take her with him so she must be sold. He has maintained her to a high standard and keeps her under full deck covers much of the time. He has tried to keep her as original as possible including replacing some ‘out of character’ modern fittings with original 1960’s Tufnol blocks he located at a yacht club Car Boot sale.
As befits a yacht of her pedigree, ‘Trim’ is regularly sailed. She participates in Sandringham twilight races and is often seen out cruising. She is a surprisingly fast boat, reflecting her designer Einar Ohlson’s extensive racing yacht design experience and she always remains easily handled. In ideal conditions, she can fly an impressive spread of sails; as many as five at once: Spinnaker, Genoa, Mainsail, Mizzen Spinnaker and Mizzen!
You only have to look at the photo’s – ‘Trim’ is undoubtedly one of the prettiest yachts to be seen on any waterway. She has modern equipment where needed, including GPS, VHF, safety equipment and a more recent Yanmar diesel engine with just 360 hours run, while her standing rigging was replaced in 2015. Her overall appearance, however, is that of a genuine yacht of the 1960’s. Her fascinating history has been fully documented and will be made available to her next custodian.
